English is one of the key subjects to do well in for the IB. Firstly, many other subjects, such as economics and history, also require good English in order to write high scoring essays. Secondly, many overseas universities have a minimum requirement for IB english. Understandably, many IB students are looking for IB english tuition to boost their grades.
One question many parents have is: when should my child start IB english tuition? What will your course teach my child?
IBMYP students
IBMYP students refer to IB students between grade 7 and grade 11 or 12 (depending on which school). It basically refers to middle school students. It is important to note that there is no standardized testing or a standardized syllabus for the IBMYP. Thus, there is much freedom for school teachers to decide what to teach and therefore, students from different schools can learn very different things. Hence, for IBMYP English, we recommend students to do 1-on-1 tuition in order for our tutor to help them for their school assessments.
However, it is important to remember that the ultimate battle is in the IBDP, as IBMYP grades are not really considered by universities. Thus, in all of our IB english tuition courses, we also provide our own materials to prepare students for the IBDP.
iGCSE students
Some IB schools in Hong Kong, such as the ESF schools, enroll their students into the iGCSE exams. The iGCSE exams are normally taken right before the IBDP starts and acts as a preparation for IBDP.
It is important to note that there are different exam boards and different courses in iGCSE that students can pick for English. Our courses will be customized to the student’s exam board.
Similar to the IBMYP, universities do not really consider your iGCSE grades, as they are mostly concerned with your IBDP scores. Thus, the ultimate battle is the IBDP. Hence, our courses with iGCSE students will also partially aim to prepare students for the IBDP.
IBDP students
This is where the real battle begins. There are 3 types of English courses that IB students can choose from: English B, English literature, English language and literature.
